Buying used astronomy equipment can be a great way to get better equipment for your budget, but please take the same precautions you would with any private online transaction.

We've created an AstroClassifieds Safety Tips guide covering some of the most important things to consider when buying or selling equipment:

AstroClassifieds Safety Tips
Safety Tips

The guide covers:

Common marketplace scam warning signs
Suspicious buyers and sellers
Proof-of-payment scams
Banking and payment safety
Meeting buyers or sellers in person
Courier and shipping precautions
Checking telescopes, mounts, cameras and optics
Protecting your personal information
Solar observing safety
What to do if you suspect fraud

A few basic rules are worth repeating:

Never rely only on a proof-of-payment document. Confirm that money has actually cleared into your bank account before handing over or shipping equipment.

Be cautious when someone creates unnecessary urgency. A buyer or seller insisting that something must happen immediately is a common warning sign.

Check expensive equipment properly. If possible, test telescopes, mounts, cameras and electronics before completing the transaction.

Keep your discussions on AstroClassifieds Direct Messages where practical. Having a record of the conversation can be useful if a problem develops later.

Never look at the Sun through a telescope, binoculars or camera lens without a proper purpose-built solar filter.

If you encounter a suspicious buyer, seller, advert or message, please report it rather than ignoring it. It may help protect another member.

This section is also a good place to discuss scams or questionable practices you've encountered, provided that posts remain factual and don't publish someone's private personal information.

Stay safe and enjoy the hobby.
